Are you Gas Safe in your home?
See if you can find it? Check the kitchen draws, the cupboard under the stairs, the pile of paperwork sitting on your dining table, and even the draws in your bedroom. Do you know where it is? I’m talking about your Gas Safe Certificate, it looks like this:
Each year there are 5 million homes at risk for using illegal installers to carry out gas works in the home. It’s doesn’t matter if it’s only a small job, e.g. fitting a new gas cooker. ALL gas appliances need to be installed by the right person, and that is a Gas Safe registered installer.
We rely on word of mouth from our friends and family to recommend tradespeople, nothing wrong with that, recommendations and reviews are the best way to know if you’re going to receive a good service. To achieve this good service, the top items on people’s list when selecting an installer are:
- Cost
- Tidy with their work
- Quick
- Reliable
But where on the list is safety? According to Gas Safe Register’s research, only 11% of people employed an installer based on their qualification to do a job. At The Boiler Replacement Company we understand that our lives are busy, we just want someone to do a job which fits all of the above, but safety does need to be a much bigger factor.
Gas Safe Register research also showed that 65% of gas jobs carried out by illegal fitters were unsafe. 1 in 5 of these jobs was so dangerous they had to be disconnected immediately. No one wants that statistic to be their home so we all need to act now.
Our advice to homes:
- When you move into a new home, make sure you have the gas safe certificates for the gas appliances
- Still rely on your friends and family’s recommendations, but once you have the installer’s details, check they are Gas Safe registered. You can check on the Gas Safe Registered website (link)
- Or ask to see their Gas Safe Register card, it looks like this:
- ATAG Heating Technology’s i-series range are the main boilers we install. ATAG Heating Technology are the only manufacturer who sells direct to selected Gas Safe registered installer. No one else can buy or install ATAG boilers. This means homes always know they’re safe with ATAG. You can find out more about ATAG here
