How to Install the Autovent

1 Determine which end of the radiator to fit the Aladdin Autovent (AAV)

You should choose the end at which hot water flows into each radiator. To be sure, turn the heating system on and feel which end becomes hot first.

2 Switch the central heating system off

Select the 'off' or '0' position on your boiler, then allow your system to cool down before fitting AAVs.

3 Isolate the radiator

Avoid flooding by closing the isolator valves at the bottom of the radiator (at one end this will be a lockshield valve with a plastic cover) remove the cover and turn the spindle clockwise using an adjustable wrench. At the other end will either be a wheelhead valve, which can be turned off by hand, or a thermostatic valve which should be turned to ‘0’.

4 Remove the old radiator plug

Use an adjustable wrench for 'type A' plugs, or a 10mm square drive for 'type B'. Be prepared for some spillage as you do this and use a cloth to dry the radiator tapping.

5 Fitting the AAV

Remove the black dust cap and screw the AAV into the radiator using an adjustable wrench to grip it by the spanner flats – you may need to rotate quite firmly as the thread will cut into the plastic thread seal. Screw the valve in as far as possible so that the plastic safety cap is as near to vertical as possible.

6 Turn on the radiator valves

Turn the two valves at the bottom of the radiator back to their original settings and switch the system back on.
